From Alberta Roots To Affiliate Marketing Future

Hi, I’m Dawn, the creator behind Affiliate Marketers Edge. My journey into business started long before affiliate marketing, back on a farm in Southern Alberta, where I learned the value of hard work, honesty, and resilience from my dad. Those lessons shaped every venture I’ve built since.

Affiliate Marketer's Edge

As a teenager, I combined my love for animals with entrepreneurship, breeding and showing Chow Chows and German Shepherds, while studying animal science and dog training. After I finished high school I went on to operate farm equipment, then I worked in a veterinary clinic, and apprenticed for a few years as a dog groomer. All saving up for my dream to eventually build a boarding kennel and grooming business that I successfully ran for three decades.

Burnout and New Beginnings

Running the kennel was a 24/7, seven‑days‑a‑week business with no rest. I loved the work but, eventually, the constant demands led to burnout and in the late 1990s I sold the kennel and moved into the city. I shifted my focus to dog grooming, which became a thriving business.

When the 2008 recession hit, families had to cut back, and pet grooming wasn’t always a priority. With a mortgage and overhead to cover, I had to pivot. That led me to selling things around the house on eBay, and I quickly got hooked. I began buying and selling vintage Dick and Jane readers and vintage Minolta cameras, and this venture kept the lights on and the taxes paid. Eventually, I became an eBay PowerSeller.

Around this same time, I stumbled across websites promoting affiliate marketing. I was curious, but most of them felt scammy — full of far‑fetched promises and “get rich quick” schemes. I didn’t pursue it further then, because eBay was working well for me.

Retirement and Shifting Focus

By 2015, health issues led me to retire from grooming. Since then, I’ve enjoyed working alongside my husband, who is a self‑employed tree arborist. Like many Canadians, we’ve faced income reductions in recent years, and even though we’re mortgage‑free, pensions alone aren’t enough to live on. The result is my husband, who is now in his late 60s, is still working as a tree arborist.

When I’m not working alongside my husband, I dedicate more time to growing my affiliate business. My current goal is to supplement our household income, with the long‑term vision of eventually building it into a full‑time source of income.

I believe strongly that in today’s economy, Canadians need practical ways to earn extra income, something they can build in the little time they have left over after work, something that gives them hope and a sense of control.

Discovering Affiliate Marketing

I first heard about affiliate marketing back in 2008, but at the time it felt scammy and full of “get rich quick” promises that didn’t match reality. It wasn’t until years later, during the COVID‑19 pandemic in January 2020, that I gave it a serious try. My drive then was simple: I wanted to find a way to earn money that gave me control, even when the world was shut down.

Today, in my early 60s, I still view myself as a beginner, but I’ve earned enough pocket change from affiliate marketing to convince me that it works. It’s not instant wealth, and it certainly doesn’t happen overnight  but I see the same potential for full‑time income here that I saw in the other ventures I built to success.

Affiliate marketing is really a time investment, much like going to university. You don’t expect to graduate and earn a professional salary after just a few weeks of classes. In the same way, affiliate marketing requires patience, learning, and consistent effort before the results grow into something substantial.

From Doubt to Confidence

Like many beginners, I worried whether affiliate marketing was really possible for someone like me, and whether I could ever learn the skills needed to succeed.

Everything changed when I discovered Wealthy Affiliate. Knowing it was co‑founded by two Canadians gave me immediate confidence that I had finally found the right platform for someone like me. Instead of empty promises, Wealthy Affiliate offered clear, step‑by‑step training, practical tools, and a supportive community.

That shift, from doubt to confidence, was the turning point. It showed me that affiliate marketing isn’t about shortcuts, but about learning, building, and investing time, just like any other skill. And for Canadians, it’s reassuring to know there’s a platform built with our needs in mind.

When I joined Wealthy Affiliate in 2020, their training also saved my husband thousands of dollars. Instead of hiring someone to build his business website, I built it myself and since then, I’ve built many more websites. That experience showed me that Wealthy Affiliate training opens doors beyond affiliate marketing. Whether it’s building websites for clients, creating niche blogs, or using their cutting‑edge AI tools, there are multiple ways to earn income streams. These are opportunities I look forward to sharing with you.

Why I Created Affiliate Marketers Edge

I know the fears, frustrations, and doubts that come with starting something new. I also know the excitement of seeing small wins add up to real progress. That’s why I built Affiliate Marketers Edge: to give Canadians a beginner‑friendly, trustworthy hub where they can learn affiliate marketing.

Here you’ll find:

  • Step‑by‑step guides in beginner-friendly explanations
  • Tools and resources that actually work in Canada
  • Encouragement and support to keep you moving forward
  • Real stories and lessons from my own journey

My philosophy is simple: affiliate marketing isn’t about chasing every dollar, it’s about building something you believe in. If you promote products that you use, trust, and that truly help people, the income follows naturally.

I started as a farm girl, built a kennel, ran a grooming business, became an eBay PowerSeller, …I share this not to boast, but to show that I understand what it takes to succeed in business. The training, tools, and resources I’ve found at Wealthy Affiliate are now the foundation of my affiliate journey, and I want to pass along what works for me so fellow Canadians can save time and focus on building income streams that truly work for us.

Wherever you are in your journey — curious, cautious, or ready to dive in — remember this:

“You don’t need to know everything before you start.  You just need to start.”

With warmth and encouragement,

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is affiliate marketing really possible for beginners in Canada? Yes! Affiliate marketing is one of the most accessible ways to start building an online income. You don’t need a tech background, a big budget, or years of experience — just the willingness to learn and take action. Thousands of Canadians are already proving it works, and the opportunities continue to grow. It’s legal, legitimate, and can be started on a very small budget.

What makes it exciting is how quickly you can see progress once you begin. With the right training and tools, every small step builds momentum, and before long you’ll have a website, content, and a growing online presence that you created yourself. The freedom to work from anywhere and build something of your own is what keeps so many Canadians motivated, and it’s exactly what drew me in.

Q: Do I need to know tech stuff or coding? Not at all. I had no coding background when I started, yet I’ve been able to learn and apply new skills step by step. Wealthy Affiliate makes it possible to build websites, understand analytics, and even run online ads without needing a technical background.

At this stage in my life, I’ve surprised myself by designing logos, building websites, and optimizing them for SEO — things I never imagined I’d be doing. The best part is how enjoyable it’s been to keep learning and putting these skills into practice as I grow my affiliate businesses.

Q: How much does it cost to start? You can start completely free. Later, when you’re ready to grow, premium plans add more training, hosting, and tools — but it’s 100% optional at the beginning. After taking the starter membership for a 2‑week test drive by building my first website, I was so excited with what I was learning that I took the plunge and became a Premium Plus member — and I’ve never looked back. It has been the best decision I made.

Here’s why: Wealthy Affiliate Premium Plus+ costs $99/month, but if I had to buy the same tools separately, I’d spend $250–$400/month. Hosting alone for 10 sites can cost $25–$40/month, keyword research tools like Semrush or Ahrefs run $99–$199/month, AI writing tools are $20–$30/month, and design tools like Canva Pro add another $10–$20/month. Wealthy Affiliate bundles all of this — plus training, community support, and affiliate program discovery — into one platform.

That’s why I say it’s worth every penny. WA saves me hundreds of dollars each month compared to piecing together separate subscriptions, and it gives me everything I need under one roof to build my affiliate business.

Q: What affiliate programs work best for Canadians? Programs like Amazon.ca, BestBuy Canada, Rakuten, and other Canadian‑friendly networks are excellent places to begin. I provide lists, guides, and checklists to help you choose programs that fit your niche and audience.

You can also become an affiliate for Wealthy Affiliate even with the free starter membership. What makes WA unique is that you can earn not only by promoting the platform, but also by engaging with the community — commenting on training videos, answering questions, and even creating your own training inside the platform.

On top of that, Wealthy Affiliate’s Business Hubs section helps you discover affiliate programs directly related to your chosen niche. This saves hours of research and ensures you’re connecting with programs that make sense for your audience. It’s a supportive environment where you learn, contribute, and grow while building your affiliate business.

Q: What’s the best place to start learning affiliate marketing? I always recommend Wealthy Affiliate. It’s beginner‑friendly, co‑founded by Canadians, and brings everything you need together in one place — training, website hosting, keyword tools, business hubs, AI tools, and community support. Instead of paying separately for all those services, Wealthy Affiliate’s all‑in‑one platform saves me hundreds of dollars each month. For me, it’s been worth every penny and the key resource I use to build my affiliate business.

Q: Can Wealthy Affiliate help me beyond affiliate marketing? Absolutely! Wealthy Affiliate’s training goes far beyond affiliate marketing. Since joining, I’ve built multiple websites and discovered how powerful their AI tools really are. Whether your goal is to grow an affiliate business, design websites for clients, or explore other online income streams, Wealthy Affiliate equips you with the skills to do it.

I’ve personally used what I’ve learned to design a logo and build a website for my husband’s arborist business. I also learned how to optimize his site for SEO, interpret Google Analytics, write blog posts, and even run social media ads — skills I never had before. The best part? I’ve had so much fun learning and applying these tools again and again as I continue to build new websites.
